As part of my senior seminar project about views on journalism in Lanzhou, China, I interviewed journalism professors and students at Lanzhou University while I studied abroad there learning Chinese, and I made this documentary video to share their views with the world (or at least to whomever happens to watch this).

International Festival Follow-Up
One of the Uzbek students here is a reporter for the news station in Uzbekistan’s capital city, Tashkent. He made a news package about the international festival and posted it on this Chinese video site, so you can get a feel for what the festival was like.

At about one minute into the video, there’s a short clip of me speaking Uzbek. I’m just saying the normal greeting, “Assalomu alaykum.” Nothing complicated.

Just a Thought...
Thanks for reading my blog! I'm glad that you're interested in what it's like for me in China. And it means a lot to me that you care about how I'm doing.
But honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about blogging.
It's a good way to share my experiences. The journalist in me tries to write objectively about what it's like in China. Some of my blog entries are more personal, though, and those are the ones I feel especially weird about posting.
I think of myself as an open person. Say anything to me, and I probably won't get offended. Ask me anything, and I'll answer. Everyone here is curious about Americans and life in the states, so I get asked very personal questions on a daily basis. I'm glad to answer and elaborate on the subject, even.
But volunteering personal information on a blog is a different story. I'm learning to be transparent, but it's weird to know that all of you are reading about my life and learning about me.
Like the title of this post, it's just a thought.

Why Blog?
I have created this blog because I am going to be studying abroad for one semester at a university in central China beginning in about a month. Recording my experiences in a foreign country is the primary reason that I am blogging. Of course, I could simply keep a personal diary, but I would like my friends and family to take this journey along with me. Also, I am open to strangers sharing in these experiences. A public blog seems the best way for me to accomplish this goal of open communication.
Another relevant piece of information about me is that I am a journalist. I claimed that title more than seven semesters away from earning a degree in journalism. One does not need a degree to practice the art. And the art of journalism boils down to one element: story telling. Blogging is one way that I can practice telling a story- my own story. Through telling my story, I hope to learn how I should better tell other people’s stories, and therefore be the best journalist that I can possibly be.
As for the name of my blog, Traveling Alone, it is obviously relevant in that I will be leaving everything that I know and everything that I am comfortable with as I travel. I will be on a journey by myself in a foreign country. The name, however, is the title of a song by Sherwood that seems to aptly describe my personal situation. But I will save an explanation for another blog entry.
